Projects

Be aware. Be prepared.

Currently, many maids and care workers leave Sri Lanka without basic information about their scope of work, their rights, human trafficking awareness, basic English language skills, cultural understanding of the destination country, and how to identify and report abuse. This lack of preparation can leave these individuals vulnerable to exploitation and limit their ability to succeed in their host countries. Selvern trust seeks to rectify this situation and help this community that brings significant benefits to the country.

Following qualitative and quantitative research with returning maids and care workers, their families, Grama seveka and other members of the community, we produced a 10 Episode Tele-drama that while telling a story imparts essential knowledge and information to enable those going abroad to be aware and be prepared. The Drama series is called “Sihinaya Obemai” (The Dream is Yours) and features Damithri Subasinghe and Udith Abeyrathne. The series will launch on Dialog TV Channel 100 GURU TV on the 10th November 2023. It will also be featured on YouTube.

AJDN Selvadurai Hostel

A project in memory of AJDN Selvadurai, an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka by profession and a triple international, representing Ceylon in tennis, athletics and cricket.  He played cricket for St Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club and the national team of Ceylon in 1945/46.  He captained the Tamil Union Cricket Club in 1946.  In his memory and to foster the development of rural Cricketers, the Selvern Trust in collaboration with the Tamil Union Cricket Club is developing and upgrading the current hostel for outstation players.

Speaking English

Selvern trust is developing a mobile phone application that would make it easy for urban and rural poor young people to speak English.  The app will make it easy for those who can’t read or write English to speak the language.  It will use Artificial Intelligence and a friendly user interface to make it simple and easy, first learning single words and then progressing to sentences.  We hope to launch the application in early 2024.
